Raise cash from your unwanted Christmas gifts

In the wake of another year of Christmas over indulgence, Cash Converters stores across the UK are helping people get their finances back on track by encouraging them to turn their festive cast-offs into cash.

Taking into account the annual financial pressures a new year brings, research released by the UK’s number one retailer of second hand goods, Cash Converters, has uncovered that one in three UK consumers are sitting on unwanted Christmas presents that they will never use.

The research also found that almost 75 per cent of people give their unwanted goods to charity shops, a third pass items on to friends and family and almost 30 per cent throwing their belongings away, meaning huge opportunities to convert goods into cash for the new year are being missed.

David Patrick, chief executive at Cash Converters, said: “Inevitability every year most people will receive an unwanted gift or two and this coupled with the fresh start of a new year makes January one of our busiest months.

“Gadget spending hit over £3 billion for presents for children alone this Christmas so it’s no surprise that we have seen a number of technology items brought in to stores to make way for new versions. People come in with almost brand new iPads, games consoles, mobile phones, laptops and televisions to turn into instant cash which are still in great condition for a second owner.

“People who come in to the store after having a clear out are often surprised at what we will buy from them, we have seen a whole host of bizarre and unusual items come through our doors recently including a prosthetic limb and a Punch and Judy stage. These unwanted items put money back into pockets – a welcome relief after the expense of Christmas.”

With the research also revealing that one in seven people store unwanted and unused items in their loft, Cash Converters is reminding people of their popular buyback scheme. David continued: “Our buyback scheme is also very popular. If you are unsure whether you want to sell your goods, but you need instant cash, then pop in to one of our stores with some up to date identification and we will agree a price, give you cash and place the items in secure storage, guaranteeing you the right to buy them back from us within 28 days. This is great if you are unsure if the item is something you can’t do without.”

Cash Converters is the UK’s number one retailer of buying and selling pre-owned goods and a financial services provider, with 227 stores across the UK and 730 worldwide. As well as offering a place to shop for pre-owned bargains and sell unwanted goods for instant cash, it also provides a range of financial services including pawnbroking, cheque cashing, laybys and buyback.
