6 Best movies to watch this Halloween

The clocks have gone back, the nights are cold and dark, the spooky season is upon us. What better way to spend a dark night than scaring yourself senseless?

From Dusk Till Dawn

No movie list would be complete without a Quentin Tarantino film! It’s difficult to describe and discuss with- out giving too much away and spoiling a great twist. The film begins as a crime thriller about bank robbing brothers before turning into one of the greatest hor- rors of all time. As all Tarantino films are, it is gory, gruesome and downright brilliant.

The Silence of the Lambs

A young F.B.I. rookie must seek the help of an impris- oned and manipulative cannibal to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims. The villain may not induce the same level of fear as Freddy or Jason, but Hannibal Lector and Buffalo Bill are amongst some of the most memorable monsters in film.

Scream

The Wes Craven classic revolutionised the slasher-hor- ror genre. The film manages to mix humour, horror and twists almost like no other. Often becoming a self-parody of what we have come to expect from horrors and builds on these expected clichés to create a constant suspension of fear.

Amityville Horror

The original haunted house story, our list wouldn’t be complete without it. This is the archetypal story: a family moves into a house where horrible murders took place, and then bad things happen to the new residents. However, unlike most films of this genre, the story behind the family buying the house makes sense.

The Others

Every good ghost story introduces an element of uncertainty: are these things happening or are they in your head? The film follows children who suffer from a sensitivity to light, which means the gothic mansion they inhabit must always be swathed in thick curtains and darkness throughout. This is made difficult for the family once the other unexpected guests begin to leave doors and curtains open most mysteriously.

The Shining

The Shining is probably the greatest Stephen King adaptation. A struggling writer who gets a winter job as caretaker of The Overlook Hotel, where the isolation appears to send him out of his mind. Are there people inhabiting the hotel alongside him? Is he just imagining these ghosts which seem to be sending him insane?
